Although the Irish have always been associated with luck, the success of the Rainbow Riches games really caused an explosion of Irish themed slot machines. Luck O’ the Irish is no exception to the theme, however it does have a totally different style of game play, with no progressive features or pots for the player to aim for. Luck O’ the Irish also features a rather large 40 win lines, double that of most other slot machines, and resulting in some fairly strange paying combinations.
The game features on William Hill and Bet Fred betting terminal machines, as well as many online casinos, including Sky Vegas which has a free demo mode to play and learn the features on. Although the online casino version has higher playing stakes (up to £400 per spin), resulting in higher wins, the playing styles remain consistent throughout. This means that whether you play in a land based establishment, or a virtual one, the look and feel of the game will remain consistent throughout. It is worth noting however that many online casinos pay a higher percentage than the betting shops. As an example, Sky Vegas pays a random percentage of 95.23%, whereas William Hill and Bet Fred pay 90%, which is very poor in comparison.
There is no gamble feature during play, which many people may find disappointing. There is however a frequent amount of wins, as well as a free spins feature game. To activate the free spins, you need to achieve three Luck O’ the Irish slot machine symbols anywhere on the centre three lines. This will then award five free spins, with the chance of re-activating them during the bonus. This is a great little bonus, and although five free spin at first doesn’t appear to be many, it does award sometimes very large wins. A new paying symbol is also activated during this feature; gold coins. These gold coins spin, then randomly turn into a regular symbol. All gold coins turn into the same symbol, which can be anything from the lowest paying, up to wild. The bonus feature tends to be very generous with the gold coins, but as the symbol they turn into is random, occasionally they do not pay anything.
It is good to know that the symbols are chosen at random, as this implies that the bonus feature isn’t per-determined, unlike Barcrest bonus games. Once the bonus feature has ended, the total amount of wins are paid, plus 1x your starting stake. You are then returned back into regular game play. Interestingly, the bonus spins are capped at 255, not that you are likely to get anywhere close to that amount. The maximum win per free spin bonus is of course the jackpot.
All in all, a nice playable machine, with a good paying feature and some good potential for high wins in-between.
