Ferris Bueller’s Day Off review

There were some great films made in the 1980s and many featured American teenagers as their main focus. Classics like ‘The Breakfast Club‘ and ‘Pretty In Pink‘ were directed by the late, great John Hughes as was the subject of this video slot game from WMS Gaming, ‘Ferris Bueller’s Day Off.’

This is a five reel game with 35 paylines for you to try and win on. The minimum stake is £0.05 and goes all the way up to £125. That’s a hefty amount to gamble on one spin of the reels but if you can afford to lose it then go ahead. If you’d rather not play for real money, then maybe stick to playing slots for fun so you can’t dent your bank balance.

When the game has a theme, it’s important that the game developers do as much as they can to carry that theme through as much as possible. Symbols are a big part of that and in this game we have several of the characters from the film including Ferris himself (played by Matthew Broderick), Sloane (Mia Sara), Grace (Edie McClurg), Principal Rooney (Jeffrey Jones) and Cameron (Alan Ruck). Rather than drawn symbols we have stills from the movie and there’s a degree of animation with these too. There’s also his red Ferrari convertible, his sunglasses, Bueller’s hat, a telephone and a dog. An added bonus is that we do get to see some clips from the movie. The wild in this game is the Ferris Bueller’s Day Off logo. It doesn’t appear on all of the reels though just the second, third and fourth. It substitutes for all the other symbols in the game apart from the scatter symbol which is the ‘Save Ferris’ badge. More about the importance of that scatter symbol in a moment.

The control buttons for the game are all down the bottom of the screen. These give you the chance to set your stake for the game and how many lines you want to play. Keeping up to date with the cost of the next spin and your account balance is all neatly displayed. There’s an autoplay feature here and this comes in normal and advanced levels. You can either choose up to 50 automated spins or press the advanced button. This brings up a table where you can set a number of conditions including a win threshold or stopping the autoplays when a big win or the bonus round comes along. There’s also the link to the paytable which is always well worth a look. Once you’ve read that you will know the rules of the game, ideal preparation for the battle ahead. Try to get some free games too as you build up experience of playing the game before risking your real cash balance.

Bonus Games

There’s plenty of bonus games in ‘Ferris Bueller’s Day Off.’ Three or more of the scatter symbols get you into the Fake the Parents Bonus Round. When this has happens a new screen comes up which shows a musical keyboard. You have to press keys in a bid to win some free spins. You can also wins some multipliers and your target is to get a video come up that shows you’ve managed to hack into the school computer in order to reduce his days absent total. Then it’s on with the free spins you’ve managed to earn. If you can get the car symbol on reel two and the Cameron symbol on the fourth reel then this gets you into the Kick the Car feature. You need to press ‘Go’ for Cameron to kick the car and each time she manages to do just that you’re earning yourself a higher multiplier. When the car is finally trashed the bonus game comes to an end and the multiplier you now have is applied to the overall bet that triggered the bonus feature.

The bonuses keep on coming in this game and the third one is a randomly activated feature. This gives you the chance to win a Hollywood jackpot. You need to make up to four selections to reveal film reels and move your way up the jackpot ladder. A bronze reel awards you three points, a silver one five and a gold gives you ten points.

There’s plenty to enjoy about this game, though if you haven’t seen the movie the theme and symbols won’t mean much to you. The bonus rounds are varied and there are definitely some good prizes to be won here.
