What would slot game developers do without history? They continually delve into every kind of historic period you can think of in order to create a new game. Well this one heads to Scandinavia and the Vikings. Now at school I thought they used to just go round pillaging and doing other things that I had to look up in the dictionary. None of that here but in ‘Viking Vanguard’ from WMS Gaming, there are plenty of chances to get some good wins.
This is a six-reel game that has a total of 60 fixed paylines. Don’t go thinking that means this is going to be an expensive game to play because it isn’t really. Each bet you make pays for two lines so the cost of playing is between £0.30 and £90. It shouldn’t be too hard to find a stake you’re financially comfortable with. You can also find other real money slots to play if you can’t find a limit that suits you.
The reels are transparent and behind them you can see a rather cold looking landscape complete with a castle, snow falling and lofty peaks. It has to be said there is a bit of a winter Games of Thrones look to it.
The symbols in this game include a wolf, raven, three metallic designs, three runes and the male and female characters. The wild is the dragon’s eye and this appears stacked on one of the reels. This really gives you a good chance of piling up the winning combinations and keeping your account balance ticking over nicely. The scatter symbol is a red tree and the wild can’t substitute for this.
Playing the game isn’t at all difficult with all the main control buttons down at the bottom of the screen. Have a good look through the paytable which is down at the bottom left and the rules which are accessed via the question mark in the top right hand corner. Although not the most sophisticated game around, it’s good to know as much about the game as you can. Also have some free games to get you used to playing ‘Viking Vanguard.’
The game also has an autoplay feature which is handy if you want some time away from the screen. By using the options button in the top right hand corner of the screen you can set a very precise autoplay. This allows you to set it for a certain time or make the automated spins stop when your balance gets to a certain figure (good or bad) and after a big win you want to defend.
In order to get some free spins, you need three or more of the red bonus symbols anywhere on the reels. That’s handy because it doesn’t mean you have to activate all the paylines. Just how many scatter symbols activate the bonus round determines how many free spins you’ll receive. Three see you playing with eight free spins, four get you 20 free spins and 10x your total bet and five see you winning a fantastic 100 free spins and 15x your total bet.
To give you even more chance of getting some good wins, the reel which was wild when triggering the free spins stays that way for the duration. Also one to five of the remaining reels will randomly be turned wild.
You’ll have some fun playing this but there’s not a fantastic amount happening. The bonus games are good though and the theme is a decent one with some dramatic music keeping the game going.
